DAISY / DAISY2 - Daring Applications and Innovations in Sensor sYstems
As well as more traditional aerospace applications, Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar sensor systems are ideal for a wide range of socio-economic applications such as meteo-hydrological forecasting and water-for-food. However current AESA technology tends to be large and bulky and too expensive for most applications.
The main cost driver of the AESA sensor is the transmit/receive module. By developing a highly-integrated system architecture, the goal of the first DAISY project was to develop an AESA sensor prototype that would deliver a factor 10 cost reduction as well as a factor 25 reduction in sensor volume, while maintaining accuracy, flexibility and image resolution. This would open the door to a whole host of new socio-economic applications.
The second stage of the project is to successfully industrialize the manufacture and production of the new DAISY module.
Packaging requirements
Any array by its nature needs to be carefully created to ensure there are no gaps or spaces in the overall sensing capabilities. So, in addition to developing a solution that would allow for the very high integration of the RF electronics using SiGe and GaAs semiconductor technologies, Sencio also had to look at how the complete module could be integrated into a single component that would easily interface with the complete system.
